2,000 Prizes in 6 Months of Drive-to-Store Gamification for Emporio Armani
Emporio Armani wanted to build newsletter leads and drive footfall into stores at the same time. The combination of standard email marketing and passive POS material had delivered neither. UpReach set up browser-based gamification with live prizes — entry via a GDPR-compliant opt-in on the smartphone, prize collection only in store. The result: 2,000 prizes awarded and an average of 3.7 sessions per user across the 6-month campaign run.

More than 200 B2B brands from across Europe trust UpReach — from agencies to enterprise corporations.
The initial situation
The brand worked with two separate marketing mechanisms: newsletter recruiting via website forms and store traffic via classic outdoor advertising. Both worked in isolation, but neither produced the desired multiplier effect — newsletter subscribers did not necessarily visit the stores, and store visitors left no digital data.
The central requirement was a mechanism that connects the two: one that creates online engagement, generates GDPR-compliant opt-ins along the way and forces the conversion into the physical store at the end. On top of that came three hard constraints: no app download (any installation requirement would have halved the entry rate), GDPR-compliant data capture for the German and European markets, and a run of 6 months — so not a short campaign but an always-on mechanism with an even distribution of prizes.
The UpReach solution
UpReach set up browser-based gamification with live prizes. The mechanism opened straight in the smartphone browser, with no app download. Before starting the game, every participant went through a GDPR-compliant opt-in screen: name, email address, newsletter consent with a timestamp.
The prize mechanism was live-paced — prize distribution was spread algorithmically across the 6-month run, so the tension held from day one to the final campaign day. Fixed odds would have led to a depletion problem in the first weeks of a 6-month campaign.
The drive-to-store lever: prizes could only be collected in the Emporio Armani stores — no shipping option, no online redemption. Promotion staff distributed POS material (business cards and flyers with a QR code to the game) around the stores and at high-footfall city-centre locations. The setup connected digital reach with physical footfall in a single data pipeline.
The newsletter leads were synced into the client's CRM in real time, including the opt-in timestamp and a campaign source tag. Marketing automation could start with no CSV export and no manual data handling.

Setup & Logistics
Six weeks' lead time: 3 weeks for software development (gamification logic, algorithmic prize control, GDPR opt-in screen, CRM REST API mapping), 2 weeks for POS material production (business cards and flyers in the brand identity with QR codes) and promoter briefing, 1 week for legal sign-off of the terms and conditions and a final GDPR review.
Across the 6-month run, the UpReach campaign team carried out weekly monitoring of the prize-distribution rates — the goal being an even distribution of the 2,000 prizes across the whole campaign. In-store promotion activities were planned in two-week waves, to create attention peaks without overloading the mechanism.
The cloud CMS delivered real-time dashboards to the Emporio Armani marketing team: sessions, conversion rate, geographic distribution of participants, newsletter opt-in rate and in-store redemption volume per location.
Results by the numbers

months of always-on running time
An average return rate of 3.7 sessions per user shows that the live-prize mechanism created genuine motivation to come back — participants returned because the next attempt could bring a new prize. That is a markedly higher engagement figure than classic single-use prize draws, which typically sit below 1.5 sessions per user.
In-store redemption connected the digital mechanism with measurable offline footfall: 2,000 collections equal 2,000 store visits directly traceable back to the campaign. The GDPR-compliant newsletter leads were handed to the CRM in real time — no manual data handling, no delay in the marketing-automation funnel.
The geographic distribution of participants additionally delivered insight into regional brand strength and identified stores with untapped activation potential.
Key takeaways from this setup
Algorithmic prize distribution is a must for long-running campaigns: over a 6-month run, fixed odds do not work — the main prizes are cleared out in the first weeks, and engagement collapses afterwards. Dynamic distribution holds the tension to the last day.
POS material and digital gamification reinforce each other: promoter distribution around the stores works as a physical booster for a digital mechanism. Social ads alone would have driven less footfall, because the participant does not physically register the store.
Browser-based beats a required app in any fashion campaign: the audience is mobile-savvy but installation-weary. Any required app would have cut the entry rate to a fraction. Zero-friction onboarding is a precondition, not an optimisation.
