2,338 AI Photos Across 6 Locations — Roadshow for DU.bist Tourismus Baden-Wuerttemberg

The Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism launched the "DU.bist Tourismus" campaign to build awareness of sustainable regional development. An information campaign alone is not enough to draw citizens and local stakeholders into dialogue. UpReach delivered the interactive anchor for the campaign bus: an UpReach Compact terminal with AI background removal (no green screen), digital tourism backgrounds from Baden-Wuerttemberg and a cloud-controlled scratch card for 500 algorithmically distributed merchandise prizes. Deployed across 6 locations, run by the agency's promotion staff — with no IT support.

More than 200 B2B brands from across Europe trust UpReach — from agencies to enterprise corporations.

The initial situation

The campaign was designed as a statewide roadshow across 6 different locations. The hardware had to be extremely mobile and hard-wearing, and set up and packed down by the promotion staff within minutes — with no IT knowledge and no support hotline on site.

Physical green screens were not an option on the roadshow: changing light conditions, wind and public space make green screens error-prone and impractical. The software had to cut visitors out with no aids and integrate them visually into the landmarks of the state.

The distribution of 500 campaign prizes (merchandise: hoodies, caps) had to be fair and even across all locations and the entire tour — without all the prizes running out at the first location, and with no manual intervention by the staff.

The UpReach solution

UpReach configured an UpReach Compact terminal as a roadshow setup: a compact footprint, fast set-up and pack-down, full kiosk mode with no IT staff.

For outdoor use with changing, often unstable mobile reception, the ministry booked the offline mode: the AI background removal ran directly on the terminal, independent of the network — with no green screen required. The visitor was cut out in real time and integrated into various landmarks of Baden-Wuerttemberg: Stuttgart's Schlossplatz, the Black Forest, Lake Constance.

Afterwards, participants received access via QR code to a digital scratch card on their smartphone. The cloud dashboard controlled the distribution of the 500 merchandise prizes algorithmically across the whole tour — distributed mathematically across all 6 locations and all campaign days. No surplus on the first day, no shortfall on the last.

Setup & Logistics

Four weeks' lead time: 2 weeks for AI configuration and background production (digital tourism motifs from Baden-Wuerttemberg — Schlossplatz, Black Forest, Lake Constance, Heidelberg), 1 week for gamification configuration (scratch-card mechanism, calibrating algorithmic prize distribution across 6 locations and campaign days, GDPR terms and conditions), 1 week for GDPR sign-off by the ministry's responsible legal department and end-to-end testing.

Transport in a flight case. Briefing of the agency's promotion staff: set-up time under 10 minutes, full operation via the kiosk-mode interface. No IT support needed on site. Remote monitoring via the cloud dashboard: photo sessions, scratch-card redemptions and remaining prizes visible in real time — for the campaign coordination team across all locations.

Pack-down and transport between locations by the promotion team. The entire tour ran with no technician intervention.

The UpReach Compact terminal handled 2,338 AI photo sessions across 6 locations with no system failure. Kiosk mode enabled fully autonomous operation by the promotion staff — no IT support, no technician intervention across the entire tour.

The digital scratch card distributed all 500 merchandise prizes algorithmically and fairly across locations and campaign days. The gamification worked as an icebreaker: citizens came for the AI photo and the prize draw, and stayed for the conversation about the campaign content and sustainable regional development.

For the ministry, GDPR compliance was a non-negotiable compliance criterion: consent at the terminal before every capture, an agreed DPA and a configurable deletion concept. For outdoor use, the offline mode for the image processing was also booked.

Key takeaways from this setup

Plug-and-play is a must for roadshows: promotion staff have neither the time nor the knowledge for technical set-up. The system has to be set up in under 10 minutes, explained in under 5 minutes and run fully in kiosk mode — with no follow-up questions.

AI cut-out beats a green screen outdoors: changing light, wind and public space make physical green screens error-prone on roadshows. AI cut-out delivers consistent results under all conditions.

Algorithmic prize distribution prevents imbalances: manual prize distribution leads to prizes running out at the first location or being left over at the last. The cloud dashboard distributes automatically — fairly, transparently, and audit-safe for public institutions.

Compliance is non-negotiable for the public sector: for ministries and public institutions, GDPR compliance, consent at the terminal and a documented DPA are the minimum standard. For sensitive or low-connectivity deployments, the offline mode for the image processing can also be booked.
