1,456 sessions and 3,199 WhatsApp shares at the INTERMOT for Honda Motorcycles

Honda Motorcycles activated its INTERMOT 2022 appearance with the UpReach Twist photo booth. In an average of 86 seconds of interaction per visitor, the activation produced 1,456 sessions at the stand and 3,199 WhatsApp shares afterwards. The mechanical lever: AI background removal with curated motorsport scenes, in which visitors could pose virtually next to Honda idols and virtually "test-sit" the newest motorcycle model. A WhatsApp share pipeline carried the stand experience into organic reach beyond the show.

More than 200 B2B brands from across Europe trust UpReach — from agencies to enterprise corporations.

The initial situation

The INTERMOT is the leading trade show for the motorcycle industry — stands compete visually with the physical motorcycle staging of every major manufacturer. Honda Motorcycles wanted to place the newest model prominently while also creating an interactive layer that goes beyond simply "looking at a motorcycle".

The strategic question: how does the brand's motorsport connection translate into a directly experienceable moment at the stand? Standard branded-content stations with touch operation have limited pull with the motorcycle audience. What works is imagery in which the visitor themselves becomes visible as part of the brand world — next to the current model, in a motorsport setting, next to an idol.

Operationally, the WhatsApp share effect came into play as a second funnel. Honda wanted not only to activate stand visits but to carry every stand visit into organic reach beyond the show floor — via the visitor's smartphone, into their peer network.

The UpReach solution

UpReach supplied the Twist photo booth in a software design developed for Honda Motorcycles. The AI background removal ran in real time and replaced the stand background with curated Honda motorsport scenes featuring dragon-banner staging. Visitors could choose between several motifs and integrate themselves into dynamic brand worlds — virtually next to the current model, next to Honda motorsport idols, in the race-track setting.

The software interface ran in the full Honda Motorcycles CI: branded screens, model staging, stickers and overlays referencing INTERMOT 2022. Operation was optimised for maximum speed — within around 86 seconds, the visitor went through the complete flow from motif selection to image sending.

The output mechanism was two-track. First: a photo-strip print directly on site as a physical take-home. Second: digital delivery of the image to the visitor's smartphone — with a direct WhatsApp share option that distributed the image from the activation into private chats and peer networks.

For the pre- and post-event show marketing, UpReach handled the graphic design — from the stand-branding preparation to the follow-up email template after the event. More on the technology: /software.

Setup & Logistics

Lead time six weeks: three weeks for the AI background curation (clearing motorsport material rights, staging set-ups, model integration), two weeks for software configuration in the Honda Motorcycles CI (screens, overlays, stickers, print layouts), one week for the physical stand integration and print-hardware preparation.

Set-up on the INTERMOT stand by an UpReach technician, with the camera calibrated to the stand's light conditions and a print-hardware test. On-site support by UpReach staff over the run of the show, with daily reporting of sessions / interaction time / share volume.

The WhatsApp share pipeline ran entirely GDPR-compliantly: sending the image to one's own smartphone was triggered by the visitor's explicit confirmation, and the share step took place directly from the visitor's smartphone gallery — UpReach stored no WhatsApp data or recipient lists. After the show, the entire session volume with performance analysis was handed over to the Honda marketing team.

Results by the numbers

1.456

sessions at the stand

86

seconds average interaction time

3.199

organic WhatsApp shares

The 3,199 WhatsApp shares are the real earned-media lever of this activation. Each shared shot reaches, on average, a private peer network with a high trust effect — reach that could not be generated comparably in any paid-media model. With 1,456 stand sessions, that equals a share rate of more than 2.2 per session — each stand experience triggered, on average, more than two follow-on contacts in the visitor's smartphone peer network.

86 seconds of average interaction time at the stand is a strong figure in a high-traffic trade-show environment. It means active engagement with motif selection, AI staging and output format — not just a fleeting selfie touch.

The ratio of stand sessions to share volume is the central metric: it shows how efficiently the activation translated the stand visit into organic brand communication beyond the show.

Key takeaways from this setup

Earned media beats stand reach: for brand activations whose main goal is reach rather than lead capture, the share rate (WhatsApp, social) is the decisive KPI — not the session count. 3,199 shares from 1,456 sessions effectively mean more than twice the reach of the pure stand output.

Brand world + idol reference raises the share rate: generic backgrounds are shared less often. High-quality, curated staging in which the visitor becomes visible as part of a motorsport scene or next to an idol has a far higher self-share probability. That justifies the additional lead-time weeks for rights clearance and image curation.

86 seconds is the average, not the target: an interaction that is too short (<30 sec) does not deliver enough connection depth. One that is too long (>2 min) creates congestion at the stand. The sweet-spot window between 60 and 100 seconds is directly controllable through UI design and selection options.
