567 leads from 2,378 sessions in the employee mosaic for METRO
METRO used the UpReach Virtual Booth to turn employee engagement into a visible community artefact. Through the browser-based application, 2,378 personalised selfies were created, feeding a constantly updated live mosaic of the METRO community. At the same time, 567 employees gave GDPR-compliant consent to the METRO newsletter — a lead rate of 23.8% at an average interaction time of 50 seconds per session.

More than 200 B2B brands from across Europe trust UpReach — from agencies to enterprise corporations.
The initial situation
METRO wanted an internal activation mechanic that meets two goals at once: strengthening the internal sense of community as an employer brand and winning qualified employee contacts for internal newsletters and engagement communication. Classic email campaigns with no active employee interaction produce low opt-in rates and little emotional connection.
The operational requirement was a low threshold: the activation had to work with no app installation, no separate logins and no physical station logistics — distributed across a broad employee base at different locations. A central hardware activation at one place would have excluded a large part of the target group.
The communicative requirement was community visibility: the individual employee participation was to condense into an aggregated overall picture — a live mosaic showing the METRO community in a constantly updated form. Individual contributions were to be experienceable as part of the larger whole.
The UpReach solution
UpReach deployed the Virtual Booth as a browser-based application, accessible via a central link handed out to METRO employees. No download, no registration, no app switch — the activation flow ran entirely in the mobile browser.
The user flow was clearly structured: employees took a selfie via the browser application, chose from several METRO-branded overlays and filters, generated their personalised image and could have it sent to them by email. Every image created flowed automatically into the live mosaic — a permanently updating community picture made of the latest shots.
The live mosaic was the central engagement lever: employees could see their own and their colleagues' contributions in real time — the individual activation became part of the visible community artefact. This mechanic created repeat visits and recommendations within the workforce.
The GDPR-compliant data request was integrated into the email-delivery flow: employees who wanted their image by email went through the structured opt-in process with a separate newsletter consent. The consents were captured with a timestamp and source identifier. More on the set-up: /software/virtual-booth.

Setup & Logistics
Lead time four weeks: two weeks for software configuration (UI branding in the METRO CI, overlay and filter curation, live-mosaic aggregation logic), one week for GDPR compliance review and newsletter opt-in mapping into the METRO marketing system, one week for internal communication preparation and employee onboarding.
No hardware logistics: the entire activation ran on the UpReach cloud infrastructure via the browsers of the employees' smartphones. The live-mosaic display was accessible via a separate browser link and could be embedded on internal screens, in break areas or in the intranet.
During the activation run, the cloud dashboard gave the METRO HR and marketing team real-time transparency on session volume, newsletter conversion rate, average interaction time and mosaic growth. After the activation ended, the final CSV export of all newsletter leads with complete opt-in documentation was handed over to the METRO marketing system.

The 2,378 sessions show the reach a low-threshold browser activation can achieve in the employee context — with no hardware logistics, no stand staff, no app installation. The threshold to take part consisted only of clicking a link and granting camera access in the mobile browser.
The conversion rate of 23.8% from selfie to GDPR-compliant newsletter opt-in is substantial in the employer-branding context — classic newsletter sign-ups with no interactive occasion typically reach single-digit conversion rates. The mechanism: anyone who wanted the personalised image by email gave the newsletter consent in the same flow — a natural exchange with no separate sign-up step.
The live mosaic created the community effect that goes beyond pure lead generation: employees saw themselves as part of a visible METRO overall picture — a visual artefact of the employer brand, built from thousands of individual contributions. The average interaction time of 50 seconds per session shows that the activation worked as a short, focused experience and did not become a burden.
Key takeaways from this setup
Browser-based activation scales better than hardware stations in a distributed employee context: as soon as the target group works across several locations or operates hybrid, physical station set-ups are a brake on reach. The Virtual Booth eliminates the location constraint entirely.
A live mosaic creates engagement that extends beyond the single session: an isolated photo activation ends after the shot. The mosaic creates a visible community output that motivates repeat visits and turns the activation into a continuous community process.
A newsletter opt-in in the natural flow produces higher conversion than separate sign-up logics: positioning the data sharing as the precondition for the email delivery of the image ties the exchange logically to the desired experience. That is more transparent and more efficient than after-the-fact newsletter advertising.
Employer-branding activations need the right mix of fun and compliance: the Virtual Booth delivered a playful mechanic with self-personalisation and at the same time fed the marketing pipeline with legally sound opt-ins — both goals were met, without overloading the user experience.
